Joseph Stalin was an ineffective leader because he wanted the best for his country, however in the process of making it better, he had to kill millions of his people. Stalin was a dictator who turned the Soviet Union from a peasant society to a more militarized and industrial power. After World War I, the people of the Soviet Union were seeking for a leader to stabilise their country. This lead to Stalin creating a series of Five Year Plans in order to rapidly industrialize Russia and catch the nation up with the rest of Europe. He believed that a five year plan was necessary because he wanted to industrialize his country whatever the cost, even if it required the starvation and death of millions of his people.“Today, reliable estimates place the number of Ukrainian victims of starvation at 4.5 million to 7 million. The famine was in part the result of Stalin’s relentless drive to collectivize Soviet agriculture.” This evidence further supports that Joseph Stalin was willing to go to horrific measures just to stabilize his country. Some may say that he was an effective leader because Stalin was able to increase the number of livestock and grain productions, however, he had to murder and starve millions. It’s not just the death of starvation that he caused that contributed to his ineffectiveness, but also that he sent people who he thought would rebel against him to Gulags and worked them to death. In the late 1930s, Stalin carried out what historians now call the Great Purge, where 1.5 million “enemies of the people” were rounded up and killed. By some estimates, he was responsible for the deaths of 20 million people during his brutal rule. A memoir from written by Nadezhda Khazina who escaped execution during the Great Purge and survived in 1971 wrote, “The only purpose of such terror is intimidation. In order to plunge the whole country into a state of constant fear, the number of victims must be raised to astronomical levels.” Ruling by intimidation isn't effective because it’s simply just not moral to murder millions of your own people in order to industrialize a country, it’s simply not the way to rule a country. Joseph Stalin is an ineffective leader because he ruled through mutilating his country and fear
